This paper updates the new developments in the functionalization of polyolefins by borane intermediates. Several new polymer structures, such as comb-like functional polyolefins, functional block copolymers, functional polymers with narrow molecular weight distribution, have been prepared. The unique features in this chemistry are summarized as following: First is the stability of alkylboranes in transition metal catalysts. This allows us to incorporate borane containing monomers to polyolefins. Second is the high solubility of borane polymers in hydrocarbon solution, due to boron-carbon colvence bonding. The homogeneous reaction condition is the key factor in modification and polymerization reactions. Third is the versatility of borane polymers which can be transformed to a remarkably fruitful variety of functional polymers under mild conditions. Fourth is the high reactivity and selectivity in hydrocarboration reaction. The combination of the last three advantages offers a good control in the functionalization of unsaturated polyolefins.
