Abstract

Physical properties of materials which have been used to achieve separations include size, relative density, shape, magnetism, surface charge, color, characteristic emission, resilience and strength. The study of physical separations has also been termed attribute tracking. As a unit operation, solid-solid separations should be characterized by principles of operation, feed material properties, equations of behavior, and equations of design. Various solid-solid concentration devices have not yet achieved the theoretical maturity of other unit operations. This paper concentrates on the equations of behavior for various classes of solid-solid separators.
