Abstract
This study investigates the impact of gender diversity on a variety of emergent states, team processes, and performance of engineering design teams. Although previous research has found that mixed-gender groups can impact team functioning negatively, the results of data collection on a large team sample size of 117 design teams indicated that the percentage of females had no impact or a positive impact on team dynamics. Despite the numerous challenges involved with being underrepresented in the engineering field and in design teams, team dynamics appear largely unaffected by gender composition for a number of key team process variables.
