Generation and system impact of variable duty cycle α-RZ pulses

Abstract

We report on the generation and impact of the new α-RZ modulation format, which combines the phase encoding features of RZ-AMI with a novel technique of pulse shaping that produces variable duty cycle RZ pulses. We present simulation results showing that α-RZ pulses with an optimized duty cycle provide significant advantage over standard NRZ and RZ-type formats in a 40 Gbit/s dispersion managed system.
