Abstract
This paper evaluates the contribution of Coupland's research project from the perspective of an African interest in gerontology, and I argue that some of the underlying concepts need to be reconsidered if the project is to be extended to a different context. Then, using Rampton's paper as a starting point, I outline some of the strengths and frustrations typical of a serious attempt at multidisciplinary research.
