Abstract
A laser cooling apparatus is being developed for flight on the International Space Station, to demonstrate linewidths of the cesium atomic clock transition narrower than can be realized on the ground. In the first flight project, GLACE (Glovebox Laser-cooled Atomic Clock Experiment), atoms will be collected in a magnetooptic trap and then launched using a one-dimensional moving molasses through a commercial microwave cavity for Ramsey interrogation. Scheduled for launch in Utilization Flight 3 in 2002, GLACE will be mounted in one of the ISS Glovebox platforms for anticipated 2-3 week run.
