Abstract

The application of different techniques for improving product quality is discussed. The glass industry is presented with many opportunities to expand its impact on our way of life and to improve its own sustainability. Colorant addition, controlled crystallization or photo-induced nanoparticle precipitation can adapt glass for many application. Photochromic glasses, produced by a careful chemical doping and heat-treatment of borosilicate glasses, are the first widely commercialized 'smart glasses'.
