Abstract
Goals–plan–action theories of communication propose that individuals produce messages derived from cognitive templates that are themselves activated by desires. Although early forms of the theory emphasized the production of interpersonal influence messages, current versions attempt to explain a broad array of communicative functions. The unified diversity of the research shows a family of theories that share a common core of assumptions.
