Abstract
Green bacteria are anoxygenic chlorophototrophic bacteria that belong to three phyla in the domain Bacteria: Chlorobi, Chloroflexi, and Acidobacteria. Green bacteria synthesize millions of bacteriochlorophylls c, d, or e, which are used to assemble chlorosomes, Nature's most powerful light-harvesting antenna complexes. This article summarizes recent progress in understanding the biosynthesis and structure of the bacteriochlorophylls found in chlorosomes, as well as structural and functional aspects of the type-1 and type-2 photochemical reaction centers found in green bacteria. Progress in understanding the electron transport chains of green bacteria is also discussed.
