Abstract
The microstructural characteristics of unalloyed ductile iron austempered at various tempertures for various times have been characterized and correlated to charpy impact toughness. SEM was used to reveal the microstructural details of the austempering process for polished and etched specimens at high magnifications as well as revealing fracture surface characteristics. X-ray diffraction techniques and nondestructive magnetic permeability measurements were used to estimate the amount of retained austenite present in these structures.
