Abstract

Better control of electrical loads through power electronic devices helps save energy. However, extensive usage of such electronics degrades the quality of power by introducing harmonics, which are sinusoidal currents and voltages with frequencies that are integral multiples of the system design frequency. Harmonics have several negative effects such as increased energy losses, breaker tripping, and reduced asset lifetime. Filters are used to remove harmonics from the sys- Tem. In this paper, we investigate the costs and benefits of placing harmonic filters in a real-world building. Existing works do not provide satisfactory insights on this issue as they are either based on simulation models or have unrealistic assumptions about filter placement.
