Abstract
We calculate the potential energy V(r) of a He atom above an incommensurate Ar film on either a graphite or a Ag surface. The dominant term in the interaction is the sum of He interactions U(r-Ri) with the Ar atoms; non-negligible contributions arise also from the substrate and from three-body interactions involving both adatoms and the substrate. The dependence on coverage is explored. The results are quite similar to those found previously for the cases of Kr and Xe adlayers at lower coverage.
