Abstract

Hedge funds suffered their worst year on record in 2008, during the financial crisis of 2007-2008. Yet, the crisis has brought more attention to the so-called shadow banking system, which includes hedge funds, among other players. This chapter focuses on two important issues that have received extensive coverage in the wake of the financial crisis: the role of hedge funds in the crisis and the regulation of hedge funds. In particular, this review surveys recent studies that examine trading activities of hedge funds during the crisis and reports some recent developments on how to extract the information about systemic risk from hedge funds.
