Abstract

The unidirectional energy transfer from the pump beam is mediated by some dynamic grating formed by mixing of an input 'pump' beam with its scattered noise. In liquid crystals, owing to the ease with which the crystalline axis can be perturbed by the applied field, the process requires very low optical power. This paper discusses the theory and practice of laser induced orientational scatterings, in which a polarized 'pump' laser is converted into its orthogonal polarization component by two-beam coupling effects between the 'pump' and its scattered noise.
