Abstract

We discuss the conditions under which a high-entropy pair jet or fireball can result from the violent merger of compact binaries consisting of a neutron star and another neutron star or a black hole. We estimate the wind mass-loss, and consider scenarios in which the pair-photon plasma produced by vv¯ annihilation can attain highly relativistic expansion velocities, resulting in gamma-ray emission of sufficient energy to be observable at cosmological distances.
