T1 - High Q2 structure functions of nuclei-open questions

GeV2 <Q2 <20GeV2 would be necessary . To illustrate the expected counting rates we consider hypothetical measurements using SLAC 8 GeV spectrometer and electron flux of 2 10 17elect/hour . For carbon target of 6% radiation length measurements for discussed Q2 range and x=1 would take - 10 hours . Estimates of the cross section at x=1 .5 within existing models of short-range nuclear structure differ very much . If one uses optimistic values of F2A - measurements of FgA (x-1 .5) would take - 103 hours while for pessimistic scenarios - 10 4 hours may be necessary . Thus it appears that measurements of superfast quark distributions in nuclei would require an electron facility dedicated for the nuclear physics studies . To summarize, the high precision studies of deep inelastic scattering from nuclei, combined with studies of semiinclusive deep inelastic reactions can provide important insights into the origin of nuclearforces and to the structure of short-range correlations in nuclei. N2 - The aim of this talk to explain existence of a number open problems in investigations of parton distributions at x ε (0.01 - 1.5) in nuclei as well as in the studies of higher twist contributions to the high Q2 structure functions of nuclei which are important for understanding of the structure of bound states in QCD. Main emphasis will be on the measurements which would be feasible using high intensity electron machine in the 20 GeV energy range.
