Abstract
Background: Synaptic and extrasynaptic GABAA receptors mediate phasic and tonic inhibition, respectively. Results: Overexpression of extrasynaptic GABAA receptors decreases synaptic GABAergic transmission. Conclusion: Synaptic and extrasynaptic GABAA receptors may have intrinsic competition in single individual neurons. Significance: Phasic and tonic inhibition interacts to maintain homeostasis of total inhibition.
