Abstract

The human respiratory tract is armed with an integrated system of host defenses that serves to protect it against infection. A dynamic interaction exists between these defenses, including mechanical, chemical, and immunologic mechanisms. This article provides an overview of the nature and physiology of each host defense mechanism and detailed descriptions of their interactions with one another.
