Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the roles and responsibilities of human resource (HR) professionals and HR departments in the international context of multinational corporations (MNCs). The chapter starts by outlining the contribution of human resource management (HRM) practices in general to MNCs, and expands the focus to include how MNC HRM practices affect the broader society in which they are implemented. We highlight their value-adding influence, but also their potential clash with local traditions and priorities. Focusing on HR departments in MNCs, the chapter contrasts strategic and administrative roles, as well as exploring the roles of HR professionals working in corporate HR versus subsidiary HR departments. These roles are linked closely to significant MNC characteristics, helping to align HRM activities with corporate goals.
