Abstract
There is little or no controversy about the structure and crystal chemistry of sodium zirconium phosphate (NZP) family of materials except the Li-member. The objective of this study was to establish the structure and crystal chemistry of lithium zirconium phosphate by synthesizing it under different conditions. A lithium zirconium phosphate, LiZr2(PO4)3 has been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions at 220°C. Its unit cell is monoclinic with 'a' ranging from 15.2 to 15.4Å, 'b' from 8.8 to 8.9Å, 'c' from 8.9 to 9.2Å and β from 124.8 to 125.3°. This phase forms also by firing stoichiometric gels below 1080°C, above which temperature a rhombohedral form of LiZr2(PO4)3 crystallizes with hexagonal axes of a = 8.856 A ̊ and c = 22.205 A ̊.
