Abstract
A synthesis of 2, the hexahydronaphthalene portion of the hypocholesterolemic agent compactin (1), is described. The four contiguous asymmetric centers of 1 were established in an efficient stereospecific manner via a Lewis acid mediated intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction of 11.
