N2 - A method for the separation and characterization of several naturally occurring and synthetic pterins is described. As little as 1 μg of biopterin, neopterin, and other pterins may be identified after quantitative conversion to trimethylsilylated derivatives followed by separation and characterization by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. This method, combined with preliminary purification procedures, should prove useful as a rapid means of identifying small amounts of pterins normally found in a variety of biological materials.
