Abstract
Shows that among all the African traditions found in Cuba, Yoruba, known in Cuba as Lucumi, forms the basis for all that is known as Afro-Cubanism. The major figure in Yoruba tradition is an oracle, Ifa, whose mythological, cultural, ritual, folkloric form has changed little in Cuba. From its African oral form, the literature of Yoruba tradition became part of the sacred written texts, or Patakin, the function of which was to maintain the African legacy intact while at the same time passing it from hand to hand. From these texts, the images already consolidated in Cuban society began to infiltrate and become visible in literary works. -from English summary
