Abstract

Speech anxious subjects repeatedly imagined each of 4 scenes described by either stimulus or stimulus + response imagery scripts. Physiological and self-report measures of fear and of imaginal qualities were obtained. Narrative reports of first and last presentations of each scene were content analyzed for amount and kind of detail reported. Heart rate declined in a smoother fashion over repetitions of scenes with stimulus scripts. Content analysis revealed that subjects in both conditions tended to include response detail in their reports. Changes in response detail over repetitions correlated significantly with both heart rate and subjective fear.
