Abstract

The phase transitions in Ti-6Al-4V alloy welds were observed in situ using spatially resolved x-ray diffraction (SRXRD). The measured width of the β-Ti phase field was found to be less than the width calculated by analytical heat flow modeling and equilibrium thermodynamics for all welds. Differences between the measured and calculated time required for the α-Ti→β-Ti transition were determined and related to the kinetics of the phase transition.
