Abstract
Campylobacteriosis is a zoonotic disease that gets transmitted to human beings through live or dressed chicken. Incidence of Campylobacter jejuni in chicken and their carcasses indicates the result of exposure. Isolation of Campytobacter jejuni 25 cloacal samples from live poultry birds, 15 intestinal swabs from dead birds and 25 meat surface swabs from various commercial broiler poultry meat outlet was attempted. A total of 27 isolates were obtained from the 65 samples tested. Forty eight percent of the cloacal samples, 33.4% of the intestinal swabs and 40% of meat surface samples were confirmed to contain C. jejuni. Antibiotic sensitivity pattern revealed that nalidixic acid, gentamicin and enrofloxacin can be used for the effective control of this infection as all the isolates were 100% sensitive to these antibiotics. The importance of personal hygienic measures of the persons in poultry industry and sanitary measures to be adopted at poultry meat outlets to prevent the occurrence of this disease in human beings are also discussed.
