Abstract

The results of an extensive AC heat capacity study supported by a model calculation and further thermodynamic analysis indicate that the anomaly near 49K in the submonolayer region of nitrogen adsorbed on graphite is due to an incipient triple point, in which the low free energy of the solid suppresses the liquid phase, rather than a genuine triple point or a multicritical (i.e. tricritical) point.
