Abstract

Remotely sensed data, such as satellite-based rainfall estimates have become a key tool to allow water-index-based insurance (WII) to scales where it could meaningfully impact poverty. A challenge when using satellite data involves choosing which of the many satellite products to select. Remotely sensed data can be used to extend WII to millions of farmers in Africa and other countries, potentially mitigating their exposure to climate-related risks.
