Abstract

Given the critical importance of integrating stakeholder concerns into the design of an aircraft, this paper aims to introduce modifications to aircraft design education which highlight how to incorporate stakeholder considerations into the early phases of design. The modifications are based on results of interviews with Subject Matter Experts, a review of design literature, and an examination of aerospace engineering students’ experiences in aircraft design. The modifications are presented in the context of the 2012-2013 AIAA Foundation Undergraduate Team Aircraft Competition. Evidence from a year-long study of a senior-level aircraft design course illustrates how these modifications could be incorporated into an aerospace senior design course.
