Increasing research opportunities in the atmospheric sciences for underrepresented groups through international field experiences in Senegal

Abstract

Various efforts are being made to increase research opportunities in the atmospheric sciences through international field experiences in Senegal. Increasing the number of African and African-American scientists in these research activities include supporting and increasing institutional capacity building at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and in West Africa. This is also accomplished by participation in relevant hands-on activities in the atmospheric sciences and adoption of efficient and effective models for sustaining scientific collaboration and interaction. Peer-to-peer scientific discussions and ideas were developed with scientists at Laboratory for Atmospheric-Oceanic Physics-Simeon Fongang (LPAOSF) and the Senegalese National Meteorological Service. The scientists from LPAOSF-UCAD traveled to Guinea to obtain upper-air measurements for NASA-AMMA (NAMMA).
