Abstract

The Penn State roller screw total artificial heart consists of a centrally mounted brushless dc motor driving two sac type pumps through a roller screw antifriction screw and two pusher plates. The electric motor heart utilizes the same control strategy used with our pneumatic artificial heart. The method requires measures of both aortic (left outlet) and left atrial (left inlet) pressures. It is of great advantage to acquire these without use of any special implanted sensors. This paper discusses a method for estimation of these pressures without the use of any sensors other than those required to operate the brushless motor.
