Abstract

When discussing disability and sexuality, neurodiversity – the concept that our brains engage with the world in different ways – is often left out of the conversation. However, neurodivergent individuals (including those who are autistic or have attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, traumatic brain injury, epilepsy, and more) deserve to have affirming sexuality experiences just as much as their neurotypical counterparts. This chapter will explore some of the stereotypes around sexuality that neurodivergent people face, and the challenges they and their partners experience, as well as some of the benefits neurodivergent individuals bring to the table. The chapter will conclude with the best practices for supporting this sub-population around consent, behaviors, and identity.
