Abstract
The interplay of spatial and temporal periodicities in a chiral ferrosmectic medium is responsible for the three zones into which axial propagation may be classified. Each of the three zones is marked by specific modal attenuation and modal handedness characteristics. The generality of this observation is sufficient to conjecture that similar conclusions may be drawn for helicoidal bianisotropic mediums in general.
