Abstract

Summary form only given. Infrared-to-visible image conversion via holographic processes or Bragg diffraction in a four-wave mixing geometry has been successfully demonstrated. Requirements for good image reproduction and resolution include the proper combination of material parameters (nonlinearity, absorption length, response times), phase-matching conditions, and geometry. The authors report the first demonstration of IR-to-visible image conversion using the thermal nonlinearity of nematic film. In general, very good quality image can be reconstructed with a diffraction efficiency of the order of a few percent.
