abstract = "Additive manufacturing has the potential to revolutionize the metal casting industry. The opportunity to manufacture castings without the need for a pattern and tooling for molds and cores makes the binder jetting process very attractive. The initial work to develop a cost model for additive manufacturing has been completed. Theoretical cost curves will be presented. To date, a survey regarding the integration of binder jetting technology was given to nineteen foundries in and around Pennsylvania; sixteen sand foundries and three investment foundries. The survey provides insights on the current landscape of the traditional sand foundries utilizing the binder jetting technology and their future plans for the technology. The survey results showed that none of the foundries surveyed owned their own binder jetting equipment in house at the time of the survey interview. The main reasons stated for not having binder jetting equipment in house are discussed. The main reasons foundries are considering this technology and are purchasing binder jet produced molds and cores are also discussed.",
