Abstract

Between 1 and 10 women per thousand maternities are admitted to an intensive care unit; many more require high-acuity care outside of a traditional ICU. Although the maternal-fetal medicine specialist will have experience dealing with common obstetric critical care conditions (hemorrhage, hypertensive emergencies), others, such as sepsis and acute respiratory distress syndrome(ARDS), will be more foreign. Equity of maternity and critical care is crucial.
