Abstract
A solution of potassium carbonate, methyl ester and emulsifier was applied at a rate of 300 to 450 L/ha as alfalfa was cut and conditioned with various mower-conditioners. Chemical treatment increased drying significantly more when used with a cutterbar mower with roll conditioning than with other machines due to a thinner swath. The rolls also aided in spreading the chemical more uniformly across the plant. Chemical conditioning increased the drying rate of alfalfa dried in a full-width swath more than that dried in a narrower, thicker swath. Applying the chemical to the standing crop immediately ahead of cutting provided the same drying results as applying the chemical at the conditioning rolls of the mower-conditioner.
