Abstract
The interaction of vapor-deposited titanium and gold with self-assembled monolayers (SAM) of 4-[4́-(phenylethynyl)-phenylethynyl]-benzoenthiol was investigated. It was found that the deposited titanium atoms reacted in a top-down manner with the SAM molecules to form Ti-C bonds. The deposited Au atoms underwent continuous penetration through the monolayer, at high coverages. The formation of TiSH 2 + fragment ions indicated that Ti atoms penetrated to the Au/S interface.
