Abstract

Monolithic and composite Si3N4, hot-pressed with 6% Y2O3, were analyzed using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed the materials to be composed of β-Si3N4 grains and an intergranular phase which was partially crystalline and partially amorphous. It was observed that the amount of intergranular crystalline phase decreased as whiskers were added to the material and the intergranular crystalline part had a crystallographic structure similar to those oxides in the yttrium-silicon-oxide-nitride family.
