Abstract
Mass media inform and educate audiences about what happens in their local, national and international communities. News coverage of sport varies by country: globally, soccer dominates newspaper coverage and accounts for over 40% of articles published. Other sports that attract substantial coverage include tennis, rugby, and cricket. Absent from news coverage in traditional media are esports. Women's sport takes up 12% of gender-specific articles: more can be found in newspapers in Denmark, Germany, and Nepal. Most articles with an international outlook appear in newspapers in Slovakia, Singapore, and Canada. News coverage has changed after sport organizations established their own digital communication channels. News coverage in electronic media prioritizes mega-events over international competitions and national fixtures. Television depends on the availability of game footage. Traditional media outlets have become multimedia corporations: their digital presence depends on corporation size and local technological specifics. Artificial intelligence threatens the industry to some extent.
