note = "Funding Information: The new frontier of scientific visualization is exemplified by the report, {"}Visualization in Scientific Computing{"} (McCormick et a!. 1987), commissioned by the National Science Foundation. The report focuses on the role of computer display technology in prompting mental visualization (and presumably subsequent insight). At first, emphasis was almost exclusively on developing the display technology, but as initial technological hurdles were met, attention began to shift toward how those tools might actually facilitate scientific investigation or even change its overall character Oones 1989;Wright 1990;MacEachren and Ganter 1990). For cartography, the single biggest challenge is to redirect our attention from an emphasis on maps that present answers to maps that foster a search for questions.
