Abstract
The use of functional tolerancing specifications in mechanical assemblies is investigated in this paper. The focus is on the characteristics of functional tolerancing and its verification rather than the representations to be used in the drawing. The concept of functional tolerancing is illustrated with a simple linear joint. Functional tolerancing can potentially reduce the ambiguity inherited in current tolerancing standards while enhancing the capability of translating functional requirements into precision specifications.
