IP-level fast re-routing for robustness to mass failure events using a hybrid bandwidth and reliability cost metric

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contribution

Abstract

Mass failure events of electronic equipment that support the Internet can be caused by weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) or natural disasters. Proposed methods of protecting against isolated equipment failures include proactive and reactive mechanisms at different temporal and spatial scales and at different levels of the protocol hierarchy. For protection against WMDs with more focused impact, there is a clear need to escalate recovery to the IP level, both intra-domain and inter-domain. We propose a new proactive approach to re-route intra-domain at the IP level that jointly considers both reliability benefits and additional bandwidth costs of the backup/protection paths.
