Abstract

The May Polarization Experiment (MAYPOLE) was jointly conducted by Colorado State University, The Ohio State University and the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) during the period May 1-June 15, 1983 in the vicinity of Denver, CO. The primary purpose of this experiment was to test the differential reflectivity (Z//D//R) measurement capability which was added to the NCAR CP-2 Doppler, Dual-wavelength radar system in 1983. This paper focuses on the radar detection of hail in thunderstorms using the multi-parameter measurement capability of the CP-2 radar.
