Abstract

This paper defines the construct of joint idea-building in collaborative learning situations and proposes a hierarchy of sophistication levels of joint idea-building activity based on the frequency of idea-building moves and the pervasiveness of extended idea-building moves. Criteria for the sophistication levels are informed by qualitative analysis of sampled collaborative online group discussions among college students tasked with discussing their responses to course-related questions. Our findings will be used to revise our existing assessment rubric for evaluating the sophistication level of joint idea-building activity in the context of online group discussions, as well as inform future work for improving the validity of our rubric.
