Abstract

Thermal degradation of jet fuels at high temperatures is a principal concern for the operation of high-performance aircrafts which places severe thermal stress on the fuel. This paper presents data on the kinetics of high-temperature thermal decomposition of JP-8 jet fuel samples and some model compounds as measured by the color change in the reaction products, the depletion of starting liquids, and the formation of insoluble solids upon thermal stressing. The studies on the chemical composition and thermal stability of various jet fuel samples and the mechanisms of solid formation are presented separately in this symposium.
