Abstract

The authors propose an entity-relationship decision schema (E-R DS) for the development of conceptual schema for dynamic knowledge in an expert system. This approach is illustrated via a facilities layout planning and analyis expert system. The E-R DS approach proposed may prove to be of great use while developing large expert systems. An attempt is made towards giving a formal structure to dynamic knowledge. The point of interest in this approach is that all the decision operations are done on the relationships of the E-R diagram. These are the dynamically changing relationships that change the state of the system. This leads to an interesting observation in learning. While the system is trying to learn new concepts, it essentially creates new relationships. This approach might be useful for learning new concepts, by creating relationships on the E-R DS diagram.
