La Plazuela: Fostering Intergenerational Connections and Solidarity Through Music in Granada, Spain

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

A distinctive music scene is emerging in Granada, Spain, led by bands such as La Plazuela, which performs an eclectic form of music referred to by the band and its ardent followers as “electronic-flamenco-funk fusion,” a blend of music rooted in traditional culture and the contemporary music scene. Two of this case report’s authors who attended a La Plazuela concert in 2023 noted how the band’s performance drew a multi-generational audience, including parents and some grandparents of the band members and devoted band enthusiasts of all ages. The band also includes older adults in their productions, live adaptations, and interviews in which band members talk about inspiration and close ties with their grandmothers. From an intergenerational relations perspective, La Plazuela provides a poignant example of how music can be used as a counter-ageism tool and as a mass media-driven messenger for normalizing and appreciating the intergenerational relationships in our lives.
