Abstract
The loss of native potato and maize cultivars in the southern Peruvian Sierra results from labor shortages in peasant households. Seasonal scarcity of labor, which besets the most economically marginal peasants, undermines production of intraspecific groups of maize and potato cultivars but allows continued reliance on related cultivar with different maturation periods. Economic change in the region leads to scarcity through diversification of production of commercial crops and temporary labor migration. Cultivar loss also is affected by sociospatial organization of landuse and biogeographical characteristcs of cultivars. -Author
