Abstract

Blood lactate levels were assessed after implantation of the AbioCor implantable replacement heart to determine the adequacy of tissue perfusion. Ten calves had implantation of the AbioCor via right thoracotomy. Output of the AbioCor was calculated based on beat rate and stroke volume (L/min). Elevated lactate levels were seen after CPB but rapidly normalized after pulsatile flow with the AbioCor IRH. The resumption of aerobic metabolism confirm the ability of the device to provide immediate complete circulatory support with adequate tissue perfusion even at low hematocrit levels.
